Blogging Award: Liebster Award

Liebster Award My Normal Gay Life Blog

I woke up and began my days work earlier today and received a notification that I was nominated for the Liebster Award by Nastja from Brownie on the Go. Go check out her blog and show her some love!

Thanks so much!

The Liebster Award is a sort of networking chain and promotional opportunity taking place between bloggers. It’s a pretty fun way bloggers help each other out just a bit and I love the attention, haha! While it isn’t an actual award or anything, it’s still certainly fun to be recognized by fellow bloggers for all my hard work and I really appreciate it.

I have quite a few blogs that I love but when it comes down to it, I am a little bit biased towards the Nomadic Boys. Not only are they excellent bloggers from whom I have learned so much, they are also great friends to me and outstanding people. Their blog, much like my own, focuses on travel for LGBT people. However, they tend to focus on travel for couples, romantic things, and plenty of food. In the end, we are both writing about travel…we just happen to be gay and that’s fabulous!

The Nomadic Boys also create fantastic gay guides which I’ve turned to a number of times to figure things out in some of my destinations. I’ve traveled with them a couple of times and we’ve always had a fun time. So you should definitely go check out their work. It’s totally worth your time!

Facts About Me

6) I use to be a collegiate cross-country and track runner so fitness is super important to me.

7) I have two masters degrees…

9) Gardening is an important part of my life and that’s why I am a huge proponent of Agrotourism.

10) I want to learn to play the guitar.

Q&A Session:

These questions were asked by Nastja from Brownie on the Go.

Your favorite country so far?

My favorite country so far is Ecuador closely followed by Romania. Ecuador is an incredible place and I had the opportunity to travel the entire country quite extensively including the Galapagos Islands. It’s an shockingly beautiful place and I will probably retire there one day.

Favorite type of transport while traveling?

Trains are, hands down, the best way to travel. I went all over Europe by train and traveled across Ecuador via train as well. It’s such an awesome way to see parts of the country that you might not otherwise have the chance. You can move around freely and who doesn’t like to drink as the countryside rolls by?

What or who inspires you to travel?

I’d say my sense of wonder and intrinsic desire to wander inspires me to travel. When I see photos of deep gorges, beautiful waterfalls, busy city streets, remote locations, and the like, I feel this deep urge to go explore. This world is small today but if you can find your sense of wonder, the world is HUGE and waiting for us to explore it. I also believe that my own spiritual beliefs inspire me to travel. I want to have all the experiences I can before I go because this is where we prepare for the next existence. When it comes to people that inspire me to travel, other bloggers, historical explorers, astronauts, cave divers, scientists, my professors, philosophers, people different than myself…these are all things that stir my traveler juices.

Best memory from your trips?

One of the best memories I have from my trips is from the first international trip my husband and I took together. We were driving across Ireland and reached the Cliffs of Moher. There we were standing at the edge of the world…the two of us and I realized then that we could conquer it together. It’s a really perfect moment for me. Also, exploring the Galapagos Islands (as a whole) was an incredible experience for me.

Why did you start blogging?

Originally, I started blogging because marriage equality had become the law of the land in the US. Alfred and I were soon about to be married and I thought it would help the world to read about our lives as a gay married couple. I really wanted to accomplish visibility for those out there who cannot live their lives genuinely out of fear or what have you. The blog evolved into a travel blog because it’s one of the most important aspects of our life together. I think it’s important to have LGBT representation in the travel world because (at the moment) there is far less representation then for other demographics. I know people read my blog who are afraid to be who they are and if I can help them living openly and fiercely at home and abroad while traveling then that’s a success in my book.

If  you could only take 1 more trip, where would you go?

This one is hard because there is so much of the world I want to see. In fact, I want to see the whole world…I want to visit every country. So does a trip around the world count? But if I had to choose only one place, I’d choose Mongolia. It’s a dream of mine to travel across the country and see the many different terrains, stay with a nomadic tribe, hunt with a hawk, and just experience this incredible culture that once conquered much of the known world.

Did you earn some money from blogging?

Gazing out across the cliffs and to the sea on Española Island.

I’ve earned a few bucks, sure.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is Fried Green Tomatoes. I love seeing things from that time period in American history. If it’s a travel movie, I love love love Wild because it’s just a great movie about an impossibly difficult hike.

Cats or dogs? Which one you prefer?

This question is unfair. In my book, cats and dogs both have their merits and I love them equally. In my little family it’s me, my husband, our lab/rottweiler mix pup, and three cats.

What is your next destination?

At this moment, I’ll head to Columbus, Ohio for a Press Trip and then head to Mexico for two weeks. I’m always looking for new opportunities so send them my way!

Have you been to Slovenia?

I have not been to Slovenia. I definitely want to make the trip because my strongest DNA marker from an ancestry test is from Slovenia. I was invited to the country for Pink Wink in Ljubljana recently but I was unable to attend. I’ll probably go next year!
