Everyone has a preference when it comes to traveling solo verses traveling with a companion. I don’t mind either, really. But, these days, I really enjoy traveling with my husband. There are tons of reasons it’s more fulfilling to travel with Alfred for me…and some of those are a little inappropriate (wink, wink). We’ve gone on many adventures and I know there will be many, many more in our future.
Whatever your preference, there are definitely some clear advantages to traveling with someone. I totally understand why some would prefer to travel solo. If you venture out on your own then there is no one holding you back, you don’t need to agree with anyone else, and the adventure is yours and yours alone. But a companion can definitely add a new level to your travel experiences.
Here are a few reasons traveling with a companion is definitely a great idea. Don’t worry, I’ll write a blog post about solo travel later. 🙂
1) Two brains are better than one
When it comes to traveling, there are a million things to remember. Traveling with someone means you have two brains keeping track of things. Not to mention, two sets of eyes to double-check things and two sets of muscles to haul around bags and what have you. Though, I will admit, Alfred and I have missed a flight even though each of us should have remembered. (Darn those airline lounges and their free alcohol).
2) Safer situations
Let’s face it…while there are plenty of good times to be had, traveling can also lead to some very sketchy or even dangerous situations. The great thing about traveling with a companion is that they have your back. You look out for each other and, at the very least, watch each other’s backpacks so you can use the restroom. Having someone accompany you while traveling can also reduce the amount of stress you feel and just help create an all around safer environment.
3) More fun
When I travel alone, I still have loads of fun. I venture out and try new things. But when I travel with Alfred I feel like it is more fun because we are sharing the experience. We share memories, jokes, and have the same experiences while experience it differently. This all adds a whole new element of adventure to the actual act of traveling. It’s always more interesting and exciting to share these experiences with someone who gets where you are coming from. A companion can also serve as your support in times of need…and that makes you bond.
4) Lower costs
Some costs will be the same no matter how many people are traveling with you. For instance, each person’s airfare will be the same. But the cost of a hotel room or some food can be split between two people. This reduces the overall cost load for each person and therefore makes it a little cheaper to travel with a companion.
5) Companionship in general
Basically, traveling alone can be pretty lonely. It’s nice to have someone with whom you can chat and have a good conversation. Sharing a meal is always more fun and less awkward than eating alone. If you are alone and traveling, it can become a burden in and of itself pretty quickly when you are from family and friends.
Like I said, there are perks to traveling alone and traveling with a companion. I prefer to travel with someone mostly because I want to share the experience. A companion is able to understand the experience and recount the stories later. I’ll write a post about needing alone time when traveling later.
